Best Winter Boots 2022 (Family Buying Guide)

Winter Boots

Having to walk through snow and frigid conditions with frosty feet is not the best feeling in the world. Feeling the cold seeping through your newly bought pair of shoes is a bit disappointing, especially when you are in the middle of your winter hiking trip, and all you can think about is going back home to take your shoes off and warm up. We’ve been there, and we know that it is essential to find the perfect pair of winter boots that will keep you comfortable and protected from the elements.

If you are planning for your next trip to be at a place with low temperatures, you will need some suitable and substantial footwear. We know that not everyone is looking for heavy-duty boots that can take on those extreme weather conditions, but we also know that most people who are looking for a great pair of snow boots won’t be satisfied with just a pair of fashionable and waterproof boots. As such, we’ve put together a fair mix of different choices, so there will be something for everyone.

Best Overall Winter Boots

1. Columbia Bugaboot Plus IV Omni-Heat

Columbia Bugaboot Plus IV Omni-Heat

Sole: Rubber Sole

Shaft Height: Approx. 7.25 inches from arch

Temperature Rating: -25°F/-32°C

Columbia is a sportswear company that manufactures and distributes products such as outerwear, sportswear, and footwear. It is one of the leading brands on the market. From headgear to camping equipment, to ski apparel, Columbia is one of those brands that you can trust. Let’s take a look at their Columbia Bugaboot Plus IV Omni-Heat winter boots.

What we like with the Columbia Bugaboot Plus IV Omni-Heat is that they are a good option for winter hiking, or even just for winter errands. Their unique sole design gives these boots the best traction. The sole consists of Ice Control Sole, which is a softer Michelin rubber compound with a durable tread pattern, and a lot of siping on the sharply-edged sole lugs. These sharp edges do an excellent job at grabbing onto snow and other surfaces.
The Bugaboot Plus IV feature 200g of synthetic insulation, and an Omni-Heat liner. They are rated -25°F, which is a very high warmth to weight ratio, making you feel warmer the harder you exert effort. Thus, the lighter insulation is more recognizable when you do less work.

They are also constructed with a Techlite membrane, making these boots able to withstand snow, splashes of water, and even submersion up until the bottom of the laces and tongue.

The laces cinch down evenly over the foot for a comfortable and tight fit. They also leave room for when you want to wear thicker socks.

What we don’t like with the Bugaboot Plus IV boots is that, despite their waterproof ability, water would still leak into the boot through the tongue when submerged for a long time. Thus, these boots are more appropriate for cold temperatures, dry snow, and moderate wet winter weather.
The boots are comfortable, and can be cinched down with the lace for a comfy fit, but most will find them a little too spacious. Also, the basic footbed is flat and offers little arch support, so we suggest replacing it with a better footbed if you plan to use the boots for long winter hikes.

Overall, the Columbia Bugaboot Plus IV is an all-around winter boot with excellent traction. It is lightweight and water-resistant. It is appropriate for your winter hikes, winter errands, snowshoeing, or even just for shoveling snow.

Hiking in winter is nice for those who want to enjoy the snowy outdoors through a fairly easy activity. We recommend that you invest in a good pair of winter boots, but what if you only have access to your regular hiking boots? Are hiking boots any good for snow? Read our article to find out!

Best Winter Boots For Kids

2. Sorel Snow Commander Snow Boot

Sorel Snow Commander Snow Boot

Sole: Rubber Sole

Shaft Height: 6 ⅔ inches

Temperature Rating:  -25°F/-32°C

In the 1960’s, Sorel became one of the most successful product lines that produced sport/work boots. The brand was later acquired by Columbia Sportswear, in 2000. Up to this day, Sorel boots are a favorite among adults, and knowing that they make snow boots for kids too is exciting. One of their creations for kids is the Snow Commander Snow Boot.

What we like is that the Snow Commander Boots are perfect for active kids during winter, because they are sturdy and well-made. They have a multi-directional lug outsole that provides good traction in snowy and icy conditions, and feature 200g of insulation, with an additional 2.5mm bonded felt frost plug for extra warmth. The vulcanized rubber outsole also provides good traction, even on the slipperiest surfaces.

This edition is kid-friendly, with a Velcro strap in order to be able to quickly and easily put them on and off. They are easier for kids to maneuver by themselves, even from a younger age. The upper boot is waterproof, and is equipped with a super warm fleece lining to keep your child’s feet warm and completely dry when playing in lots of snow, or being outside for outdoor activities for an extended amount of time.

With a temperature rating of -25°F, the cold winter weather is no match for outdoor adventures with these boots on.

What we don’t like is that, although they are comfortable and fit most kids, some of us will find this pair of boots a bit heavy and clunky, especially for little kids who are pre/beginner walkers. It is recommended to consult Sorel’s size chart to find the right fit. You might also want to consider whether you want to have room for thick socks or not.
Plus, the Snow Commander Boots do not have a removable liner either, which most parents prefer in order to clean them with ease, and to let them dry when they get wet.

3. Stonz Cold Weather Snow Boots

Stonz Cold Weather Snow Boots

Sole: Non-slip soles

Shaft Height: 9.6 inches

Temperature Rating: -58°F/-50°C

Stonz is a family-owned company that started in 2004 in Canada, where they are quite familiar with heavy snowfall and negative temperatures. They keep expanding with outdoor gear, including footwear for rain and snow, accessories, and apparel. It is one of the few companies that make infant and baby snow boots. If you hadn’t heard of the brand, here’s a little rundown of their Cold Weather Snow Boots.

What we like is that these boots are very commendable due to their lightweight design. Most winter boots that are made for kids may come heavy and bulky, but the Stonz Cold Weather Boots are incredibly light and flexible.

The soles are soft and skid-resistant, which helps kids navigate through snow, without being vulnerable to stumbling or slipping. This is particularly difficult for beginner walkers, so the soles of these boots are absolutely perfect for them. There are two drawstrings on each boot, designed to help cinch them tighter and keep them in place. They also come with a Velcro flap at the top that opens really wide in order to easily slide in those little feet, along with thick socks and pants. This will also allow you to tighten the boots, so that it has yet to fall off.

The Stonz Cold Weather Boots are waterproof, and are made with a 600D nylon upper that will withstand temperatures down to -30°C. This will keep your kid’s toes toasty and dry after playing in the snow for hours.

What we don’t like is the limited color options that come with the Stonz Cold Weather Snow Boots, as kids might want to choose from many different bright colors.
As for sizing, we would recommend checking Stonz’s measuring chart, so that you know if you need to size down for a tighter fit, or to size up to give room for thick socks or to be able to use them for another season.

4. Merrell Snow Bank 2.0 Waterproof Snow Boot

Merrell Snow Bank 2.0 Waterproof Snow Boot

Sole: Rubber Sole

Shaft Height:  Approx. 6 inches from arch

Temperature Rating: -25°F

Merrell is a company that has been making high performance hiking boots since the 1980’s. It expanded from only making hiking boots to also producing athletic shoes, sandals, clothing, and accessories, like backpacks and bags. Merrell also has adorable and highly functional snow boots for kids, the Merrell Snow Bank 2.0Opens in a new tab..

What we like with the Snow Bank 2.0 snow boots for kids is that they are constructed with Merrell’s very own M-SELECT Warm lightweight 200g insulation, M-Select Dry seam-sealed waterproof composition, and M-SELECT Grip for that incredible traction. These durable boots are perfect for kids’ winter activities. They are waterproof, with a temperature rating of -25°F, and can withstand cold weather conditions, while keeping your child’s toes toasty and dry.

Everything below the ankle always stays dry because the lower part of these boots is molded all as one piece. The nylon uppers are surprisingly waterproof as well.

In addition, the boots have rubber soles with large threads, and the slim design makes it a great everyday shoe. These snow boots for kids are less bulky than others. They are also lightweight, and have an easy on and off bungee system, or the speed lace toggle system, which allows for a quick and easy fastening.

What we don’t like despite all their wonderful features is that the Snow Bank 2.0 Snow Boots are also vulnerable to wear and tear, like all other winter boots. The laces on these boots are not that sturdy, so you might want to buy another pair of laces, especially for kids who are more active, as laces lose their elasticity after a while. As for the size, you might want to size up in order to be able to accommodate thick socks.

Overall, the Snow Bank 2.0 boots from Merrell are great all-around winter boots for kids, whether for playing out in the snow, or for going to school on rainy days.

Best Winter Boots For Women

5. UGG Women’s Adirondack Boot III

UGG Women's Adirondack Boot III

Sole: Synthetic Sole

Shaft Height: Approx. mid-calf from arch

Temperature Rating: -32°F

“Ugg boots” is a term that originated in Australia, initially to refer to utilitarian footwear that is worn for warmth. They’re typically made of sheepskinOpens in a new tab. with fleece on the inside, an outer surface that is tanned and a synthetic sole.

The UGG Adirondack Boot III is the newest iteration of this boot, and offers better traction and weather protection.

What we like about this version is that it is super stylish, and you can use it for work, winter errands, or as a leather work boot. The liner is made of 200g sheep wool, which is warm, and able to insulate when wet. The boot itself is constructed with leather and thick suede, which offers good insulation along the shaft. Their breathable design provides ventilation, making them a great choice for hiking.

Additionally, the leather offers great protection against snow and water splashes, and remains flexible after heavy use.

Plus, the liner of the interior is wool, which is super warm, but doesn’t make your foot sweat when it’s warm. The removable insole is also fur-lined, and you can replace it with an insole of your own, or remove it if you need to dry the interior of the boot. The midsole is administered with dual density EVA foam for a receptive ride while hiking and walking. The outsole offers traction on chock-full of snow and slippery surfaces with lugs that are relatively deep and wide-spaced.

One thing that we also like about the UGG Adirondack III boots is that you can wear them in two ways — either fully extended, or folded down for a shorter fit.

What we do not like is that it takes a little longer to break in these boots, so you need to be patient. They might feel tight at first, but will eventually break into their true size. The shafts on these boots are also not as stable as on other boots, so it is not good if you need a super sturdy ankle support.

Overall, these are comfortable winter boots with a stylish design and excellent performance.

6. Muck Boot Arctic Ice Women’s Winter Boot

Muck Boot Arctic Ice Women's Winter Boot

Sole: Vibram Sole

Shaft Height: Approx. 11.25 inches from arch

Temperature Rating: -40 °F

The Original Muck Boot company began in 1999 as a footwear brand, and made a big mark on the outdoor world. Their sole purpose was to offer comfortable outdoor footwear, and they expanded to offering a range of styles, from fashion boots to shoes and footwear for different purposes.

What we like about the Original Muck Boot Arctic Ice Winter Boots is that they can handle even the worst weather conditions. The neoprene upper gives these boots excellent waterproofing, provides comfort and flexibility, and stretches for a comfortable fit that will not cut off circulation in the feet. They also have impressive traction that makes you feel more secure, no matter what surface you’re on, because the wide-spaced studs on the outsole makes them grippy.

These boots are very warm thanks to their neoprene insulation, fleece lining, and a 2mm thermal underlay. The EVA padded footbed and additional thermal padding keep the feet cushioned and comfortable, and are also great for those with flat feet. They are also relatively compact, so they hold the ankles well and don’t flail around. Additionally, the removable rubber insole can be easily cleaned.

What we do not like is that when you wear shorter socks, you can feel the creases near the ankle cuffs, which is mildly irritating. These boots are also a little heavy and chunky, so they’re not all-around winter boots. They’re indeed not a good option for casual activities, but rather for bigger tasks. With this being said, they are also a bit constrictive. Some might say to size down, but we believe that these boots fit true to size, with room for thick socks. However, you still may want to look at the size chart to fit your preferences.

Overall, these heavy-duty, fleece-lined, neoprene-made boots are warm and comfortable, with the best traction that most winter boots do not have.

7. Oboz Women’s Bridger 7” Insulated Boots

Oboz Women's Bridger 7” Insulated Boots

Sole: Rubber Sole

Shaft Height: Approx. 7 inches from arch

Temperature Rating: Unavailable

Oboz is another footwear company that provides men’s and women’s sandals, hiking boots, and insulated footwear. They are dedicated to planting a tree for every pair that is sold. So, whenever you think of buying winter boots, consider the Oboz Bridger 7”, that not only help you survive the cold weather, but also help the planet survive.

What we like about the Oboz Bridger 7” boots is their comfortability and warmth during winter hikes.

With their 200g of Thinsulate insulation and B-Dry System, these boots will provide extra warmth to keep your toes toasty during your winter adventures. The lacing system retains heat inside, and the removable thermal insole and thick rubber sole insulate from the cold surface. With all this warmth, these boots are also breathable, and vent moisture through their fabric to ensure that your feet stay dry. Talking about dry feet, the Oboz Bridger’s uppers are a 100% waterproof. The DWR-treated suede and breathable waterproof membrane all help in repelling water.

Their lining is soft and comfortable on the ankles. The engineered insole also keeps your feet in place, leaving room for thicker socks. Plus, the insole also provides arch support, and is designed to keep your foot in place.

The traction is constructed with winterized rubber that stays grippy, along with the numerous deep lugs that dig into snow to hold traction, even on wet terrains.

What we do not like is that this pair of boots has moderately short shafts that won’t be perfect for deep snow drifts, but having pants with boot gaiters might just do the trick.
You may also feel a slightly lifted heel and a wide toe box, but it will still be a little shallow for wide feet. To accommodate thicker socks, you might want to get a half size up.
Overall, the comfort and fit that the Oboz Bridger 7” provide will support your feet through the winter.

Best Winter Boots For Men

8. Vasque Men’s Snowburban II UltraDry Snow Boot

Vasque Men's Snowburban II UltraDry Snow Boot

Sole: Rubber Sole

Shaft Height: Approx. 8” from arch

Temperature Rating: Unavailable

Vasque was created when the founder witnessed a craze of hiking throughout Europe. He then returned to America, and created footwear for the outdoors. Up to this day, for over 50 years, the legacy continues. Let’s find out what their Snowburban II UltraDry Snow Boot has to offer.

What we like with the Vasque Snowburban II boots is that they’re well-made and lightweight, even with their 400g of synthetic insulation, which is a 3M Thinsulate Ultra type of insulation that traps heat without the bulk. They also have an ultra-dry inner liner that will keep water out and vent out moisture. The upper is constructed with durable treated leather, and can withstand water submersions up to 7.25” — its height. The lacing system is designed with both metal speed lacing rings and leather material eyelets. Additionally, there is a metal D ring to easily attach a lace hook from a snow gaiter. Doing this will also provide some added protection from water and snow.

In addition, the Vasque Nordic Rover rubber compound is the composition of these boots soles. Its bi-directional lugs gives good traction when you’re on your way up or down. It is combined with soft and pliable Cold Hold rubber compound to the center of the sole to provide more grip, even on icy pavements.

What we do not like with this pair of Vasque boots is that the width feels a bit loose, and lifted at the heel when wearing normal socks. However, it feels more secure when wearing thicker hiking socks. Thus, this version of the boots is also a good option for those with wider feet.

They also need some breaking in for that comfort and fit. Because of their lacing system, you need to open the tongue wide enough to slip your foot in. The metal rings may also cause the laces to break from friction. Overall, it is a very good choice of boots for long hikes, or even for work.

9. Sorel Men’s Caribou Boots

Sorel Men's Caribou Boots

Sole: Rubber Sole

Shaft Height: 9 ¼ inches

Temperature Rating: -40°F

Sorel has been manufacturing footwear for the past 50 years, and these Caribou boots are some of their many high-quality creations. They’re also available in a wide range of sizes for men, women, and kids. Let us share with you what we found out about these boots.

What we like about the Men’s Caribou boots is that they provide warmth, utilizing the thick 9mm ThermoPlus felt in their inner boot. The upper is made with treated Nubuck leather, the rubber sole is molded right up around the foot, and their 10.5” stack height and full height tongue enables the boots to resist water. Plus, the liner is removable, which will allow you to quickly dry them whenever they get wet.

It is also very easy to slide your foot in because of the wide opening. The large metal loopholes allow the laces to go through them very easily, and to cinch the boot tight with just one pull.

Aerotrac rubber compound is used to provide these boots with some traction; it is made up of small dot-shaped lugs for gripping into snow-packed surfaces.

What we do not like about these boots is that you have to annually treat the Nubuck leather to help it resist water longer. These are also very large classic boots. Even when you wear them with thick socks, the boots will still have space inside, and cinching them up with laces will not help that much. Thus, we prefer sizing down. They are also heavier than most winter hiking boots. The design of the traction also doesn’t have the best to grip on icy surfaces, although it still does provide traction.

Overall, they are very warm and weather resistant boots that will help you survive the cold weather.

10. Salomon Men’s Toundra Pro CSWP Snow Boots

Salomon Men's Toundra Pro CSWP Snow Boots

Sole: Rubber Sole

Shaft Height: Approx. 8 inches from arch

Temperature Rating: -40°F

Salomon is one of the leading manufacturers of outdoor sports equipment. It was founded in the 1940’s, in the heart of the French Alps. It started producing ski edges, and later on developed equipment for hiking, skiing, snowboarding, and trail running in over 40 countries and five continents. The Salomon Toundra Pro CSWP are some of their winter hiking boots.

What we like about the Toundra Pro CSWP is that they use Aerogel and Aerotherm for their insulation. This was invented by NASA, and proves to be most effective. The high-slack height and the tongue that is reinforced with gussets also add to these boots’ resistance to water.

These boots fit true to size, whether you wear thick or normal socks. They will still leave you ample room to move your toes. The liner on the inside is a smooth, yet tough synthetic fabric. The cuffs are lined with soft and fleecy faux fur, and even though the cuffs are high up above the ankle, they are very flexible and do not reduce mobility.

Salomon’s Contagrip rubber is used for the outsole of these boots, and is designed to provide good grip in very cold conditions.

What we do not like is that, although they provide good traction, the lugs are created without much space in between to be able to bite into snowy surfaces. The lacing system is also a bit challenging, and takes time to adjust to your preferred fit. Because of the tall stack that has three hooks on each side, you need to cross and hook the laces to it three times before you can tie them at the top. It does make you feel more secure, but if you are on the go, you really do not have the time to tie laces.
Overall, these Salomon Toundra Pro CSWP boots are comfortable, warm and surprisingly light. They are suitable for winter hiking, snowmobiling, and even snowshoeing.

Best Winter Boots Under $100

For kids

11. Columbia Powderbug Plus II Waterproof Winter Boot

Columbia Powderbug Plus II Waterproof Winter Boot

Sole: Rubber Sole

Shaft Height: Approx 9 inches

Temperature Rating: -25°F/-32°C

Columbia has yet another affordable winter boot designed for kids: the Powderbug Plus II. Coming from a well-known company that manufactures outdoor equipment, we are sure that this pair of boots is also well-made.

What we like about Columbia’s Powderbug Plus II winter boots is that they are super lightweight, which makes them suitable for active kids. Their 400g of insulation will keep those little feet warm up to -25°F. The durable one-piece injection molded TPR shell and outsole are also a tread pattern that is aggressive enough to grip onto snowy surfaces.

In addition, these boots are constructed with a seam-sealed synthetic leather and nylon textile, containing 6mm of washable recycled felt liner to ensure that your child’s feet will stay warm and dry, even when playing in puddles or on snow-packed surfaces.

Most kids lose their winter boots during activities, but the adjustable strap of the Powderbug Plus II wraps in front of the ankle, creating a snug, yet comfortable fit. The drawcord adjustable gaiter cinches the collar shut to wrap the lower leg in a warm and waterproof cuff, ensuring that no snow will be able to enter the boots. They’re available in wide a range of colors that your kids can choose from.

What we do not like about this pair of boots is that they do not open up enough to accommodate a toddler’s foot, which makes removing the liner and wearing thick socks an option instead. The sizes run small, which we think is due to the thick removable liner. Thus, a lot of people would prefer sizing up to leave room for socks, and to leave room to grow, so that your child can use them for another season. Overall, this pair of boots is comfortable, and will keep those tiny feet warm while your kids are out playing in the snowy, cold weather.

For women

12. Columbia Women’s Ice Maiden II Boot

Columbia Women's Ice Maiden II Boot

Sole: Rubber Sole

Shaft Height: 9 inches

Temperature Rating: -25°F/-32°C

For a fair price — just below a hundred dollars, — the Columbia Ice Maiden II are a great find. They’re perfect for wearing around town, for winter errands, and for light hiking.

What we like about the Ice Maiden II winter boots is that they provide adequate support from taller snowdrifts. They are constructed with 200g of insulation, and a waterproof suede and nylon upper. They are lined with micro fleece, and the cuff has a faux-fur ruff. The sole is also thick for added insulation.

These boots will protect your feet from moderate winter weather, and will also resist water up to the tongue gusset. The lining is a soft synthetic microfleece, and the outer material is supple, giving it flexibility around the toes and ankles. The toe box is also roomy enough to keep your toes warm. They fit true to size, while leaving room for narrow feet, and a little snug fit for those with medium-width feet. The heel does not feel lifted, and they are well-fitted.

The rubber sole is made with Columbia’s own Omni-Grip. It has deep lugs, and can adequately grip onto surfaces.

The boots also come with nylon laces, and webbing lace holders that make it easy to pull the laces tight and easy to loosen them up too.

What we do not like about this pair of boots is that they are not for the coldest and harshest weather conditions, but perform well on casual winter activities. They’re not waterproof past the tongue gusset, so remember not to submerge them in water up to that point. You also have to treat the leather to keep it waterproof and to make it last years. There is also not much arch support nor ankle support on these boots, so they’re not appropriate for long hikes.

For men

13. Timberland Men’s Chillberg Mid WP Insulated Snow Boot

Timberland Men's Chillberg Mid WP Insulated Snow Boot

Sole: Rubber Sole

Shaft Height: Approx. 6.5 inches from arch

Temperature Rating: Unavailable

Timberland started by selling outdoor footwear, and grew to manufacture apparel, such as watches, clothes, glasses, sunglasses, and leather goods. The Timberland Men’s Chillberg are some of their affordable snow boots.

What we like about these snow boots from Timberland is that they are stylish, and have a lot of features to provide warmth during walks through town, winter errands, and even hiking.

They’re made with premium waterproof leather that can withstand submersion in freezing cold water. They have 400g of Primaloft insulation, which is thin, but still provides a lot of warmth.

These Chillberg Snow Boots are designed to be loose-fitting, but are quite comfortable. The lacing system is pretty easy to use, and features a flat lace that runs through four D-rings at the bottom, and two metal eyelets up on the ankle cuff. Because the laces stay in place, sliding your foot in and tying the laces up without rethreading is not complicated.

As for the outsole, it is made of 34% recycled rubber, and a 5mm deep rectangular well-spaced lugs on the sole, allowing the boots to grip onto hard, snowy surfaces. These lugs are flat on top, which allows them to also grip on pavement, dirt, and icy surfaces. Finally, their fleece lining is made of recycled plastic bottles, which is very commendable.

What we do not like about Timberland’s Chillberg Snow Boots is that they’re completely made of leather. Therefore, the waterproof coating will somehow wear off over time, meaning that you have to apply some treatment, so that it will not absorb water. These boots also fit loose, or are simply a bit too big, but wearing thick socks will help. Generally, these boots perform well for their decent value. They also look good for wearing around town, even when the ground is covered with snow.

14. Kamik Kids’ Waterbug 5 Snow Boot

Kamik Kids' Waterbug 5 Snow Boot

Sole: Synthetic Sole

Shaft Height: Approx. mid-calf from arch

Temperature Rating: -40°F

Kamik was first introduced in the late 1890’s, in Quebec, and was dedicated to manufacturing quality and comfortable footwear for men, women, and children. Up to this day, the company keeps on expanding. They’ve adapted a more sustainable way of producing products. The Waterbug 5 Snow Boot is among their many creations for children’s footwear.

What we like about the Waterbug 5 is that they are affordable and highly functional. They feature a waterproof nylon upper to keep those little feet dry, and an 8-mm Zylex removable warmth-retaining liner to overcome cold weather conditions. The thermal insole makes these tough boots that can withstand extreme temperatures.

They are equipped with an adjustable snow collar, and an easy-grab lace lock to help keep the snow out. They also have an adjustable midfoot hook and loop strap for a snug fit.

They’re also built with a reflective patch to make it easier for you to see them when it gets darker.

Finally, these boots have excellent insulation, and are absolutely watertight as well.

What we do not like with this pair of boots is that they run small. A lot of people would prefer sizing up to leave room for thick socks, and also for feet to grow without having to change boots before another season. So, you have to measure your kid’s feet first, and find the right size.

In addition, although it is nice that you can remove them to dry, the liners are not easy to put back in.

Overall, these snow boots from Kamik have excellent insulation. They come in a wide range of sizes and colors, and are inexpensive.

DREAM PAIRS Women's Winter Snow Boots

Sole: Synthetic Sole

Shaft Height: Approx. 15 inches

Temperature Rating: -25°F

With over 6,000 styles, the Dream Pairs company covers every age range, and offers quality footwear. Although they are not really a well-known brand for extreme outdoors, they still offer comfortable and affordable footwear. These women’s winter snow boots are one of their products.

What we like about the Dream Pairs Winter Snow boots is that they come in a wide range of styles and sizes. These boots feature 200g of Thermolite insulation lining, which is known for retaining heat to keep you warm when it’s freezing outside, up until -25°F. These boots are also seam-sealed, making the external material resistant to water and wind. The cushioned insole adds to its comfort as well. Plus, the outsole is sturdy, and the thick slip-resistant rubber soles and lowers provide support and balance, while they grip onto snowy and icy surfaces. They also have faux fur at the cuffs for added warmth. Finally, this pair of boots is made to keep you warm, while looking stylish during the winter.

What we do not like about these snow boots is that the insoles are a bit stiff, so you might want to get extra ones to be able to attain that needed arch support. Also, it might be complicated to tighten the laces because of the zipper.

A lot of us prefer sizing up with this model, especially when in between sizes, to be able to accommodate thicker socks. The toe box feels also a little big, but this may leave room for mobility.
Overall, the Dream Pairs women’s winter boots are comfortable and stylish. And they will keep you warm during those casual outdoor ventures.

For men

16. Kamik Men’s Fargo Boot

Kamik Men's Fargo Boot

Sole: Rubber Sole

Shaft Height: Approx. 7 inches from arch

Temperature Rating: -40°F

If you need something that will keep your feet warm and dry without spending too much money, consider this pair of boots from Kamik.

Kamik has been around for generations, so we think that through all those years based in Canada, they have gotten the right formula for winter boots. Let us take a look at what the Fargo Boots have to offer.

What we like about Kamik’s Fargo Boots is that they are made with 200g of Thinsulate insulation and a moisture-wicking lining to vent out moisture, and to keep your feet warm up until -40°F. They have a synthetic upper that is comfortable and breathable, and a rubber lower, making it very easy to walk in, as well as protecting your feet with its steel-proof like construction at the bottom.

These boots are also waterproof and seam-sealed to keep your feet dry when trudging through snow and slushes of water. The snow tread soles also provide good traction for minimal slippage on snow and icy surfaces. Finally, the antimicrobial footbed helps fighting odors, and prevents the growth of bacteria.

What we do not like with these boots is that you need to constantly treat the upper suede if you want to make them last longer. Plus, some may feel that they are a little wide. However, this aspect leaves room for thick, warm winter socks. Despite these advantages, some still prefer to size up, especially when in between sizes. You might also want to get a pair of more durable extra laces.

Overall, these boots are not overly heavy. They are also affordable, and provide comfort and warmth during casual winter activities.

Skiing and snowboarding are other activities that you can enjoy in winter. Sadly, regular winter boots are not suitable for these activities. If you plan on enjoying the slopes with either a pair of skis or a snowboard, you will need a different pair of boots. Check out our best ski boots and best snowboard boots articles for our top recommendations.

When can I start wearing winter boots?

You can wear winter boots whenever it feels comfortable to do so. But snow boots are warm, so you do not have to wear them in the middle of summer. You have to wait for when temperatures begin to drop to take them out. However, if your winter boots are waterproof, you can also wear them in the rain. Winter boots are primarily built for snow and ice, but it is not necessary to wait for that season to wear them. If you prefer having comfy and toasty feet on moderately cold or chilly days, you can definitely take those winter boots out then. Typically, winter boots are worn in autumn, winter, and early spring, and for as long as it makes sense considering the climate where you live.

Although a lot of winter boots are not for the extreme outdoors, in terms of style and warmth, ankle boots are typically worn when fall hits. Meanwhile, mid-calf boots are good to wear for the transition from summer to fall. Once November hits, you can start wearing your knee-high boots, and layer them with over-the-knee socks, as over-the-knee boots are a huge trend during fall. Of course, fashion can’t really dictate when and where you can wear winter boots, so wear them whenever you feel comfortable to.

What are the warmest winter boots?

There are many pairs of boots that you can wear during winter, and choosing the warmest ones will depend on the type of activities that you do.

The warmest winter boots are a combination of sturdy uppers with functional insulation, thick soles with good traction, and breathable waterproofing.

Snow boots are generally the warmest boots that you can choose for the cold season. Their soles are made of rubber, and are waterproof. A lot of pairs also come with faux-fur or insulated fabrics, which are essential for keeping your toes warm, even in cold, wet conditions. The uppers are usually constructed with leather or nylon, with insoles that are usually layers of soft and warm fabrics.

Heavy-duty snow boots are for the harshest snowy conditions, while snow boots are best suited for just going to work or for casual activities. There is a wide range of snow boots, and the warmest ones will usually depend on your preferences. If you intend to wear boots for extended hours outdoors, you will need a heavy duty pair with maximum insulation and waterproofing. However, if you just want to stay warm while walking your dog, going to work, or running winter errands, you may choose boots that don’t have too much insulation.

Have a look at our buying guide to know what to look for in snow boots.

Buying guide

When shopping for winter boots, you want a pair that is durable enough to get you through the season. To make sure that you pick the right ones, you have to take the following things into consideration.

Temperature rating

It is a good guide for comparing various models. This is a comfort rating, which will allow you to know which particular product will protect you from the cold weather. So if you are in a place where the temperatures drop to -13°F, it is better to have winter boots that are rated up to -22°F to be able to keep your feet warm.

Materials

Leather is one of the many available waterproof materials, but it is not as breathable as synthetic. Nylon is also water-resistant, but it loses its properties overtime. Thus, both materials need to be treated or conditioned to last longer.

The upper material should be strong and water-resistant to withstand harsh weather conditions.

Soles

Most winter boots are made with rubber soles to block out moisture, and to come with various lug depths. The deeper and wide-spaced the lugs are, the more they provide traction.

You always have to make sure that there is good traction on your winter boots. That way, you will feel more secure, without having to worry about sliding on wet snow or ice.

Insulation

This depends on the type of activities that you are to partake. Higher insulation is more suitable for outdoor activities, for example. You may also want to look for boots that are breathable, and vent out moisture to keep your feet dry whenever you are out and about.

Wool and synthetic materials, like Thinsulate, provide warmth without the added weight. For frigid climates, opt for winter boots with 400g of insulation. For cool climates however, you can choose boots with 200g of insulation.

Shaft height

There is more to a boot’s height than its appearance. For instance, tall boots are better for trudging through snow, and will keep your ankles and calves warm and supported, while shorter boots are easier to walk in.

Liners

For outdoor activities, like hiking, it is ideal for a winter boot to have a removable liner, which can be easily dried and inserted back the next day, and can also be replaced when needed. Most liners are made of fleece, microfleece, faux fur, textile and waterproof membrane, short fur, and some have thermal materials, like Thinsulate. Look for liners that also boost the boot’s breathability to avoid chafing and overheating.

Breathability

This is essential when searching for winter boots, especially to use on long hikes, or for snowshoeing for long periods. If your feet become sweaty from all those activities, you need boots that will be able to vent out the excess moisture. In extreme cold conditions, when a boot is breathable enough, it will collect less moisture. If it is not breathable, it will trap the heat inside, and your feet will perspire, making you feel cold.

Comfort and sizing

A winter boot should offer a comfortable arch and foot support, and encourage a proper walking posture. Some boots may feel heavier than others, while some are very lightweight. If you can, it is best to have winter boots that can accommodate thicker socks. Sizes vary between different brands, so make sure to check the measuring system that the size chart uses. Also, check the boots’ closure, as it should be functional. A full lace up will allow a tighter fit. On the contrary, a zipper closure and pull-on styles are not that secure, especially for outdoor activities.

Weatherproof/Waterproof

Look for winter boots that are made with waterproof materials, not only to keep you warm, but also to keep your feet dry. Some winter boots are tall enough to withstand splashes of water and snow, but some are shorter, however, you can always throw on a pair of gaiters. Boots are often made with waterproof leather, or materials like Gore-Tex. Some are also made with nylon material, and coated with PU coating to make them water-resistant.

When looking for winter boots, you always have to prioritize your comfort and safety over fashion and style. Although, some manufacturers have come up with stylish, yet warm boots that will protect you from cold weather conditions.
