Best Fanny Packs in 2022

Fanny packs

Fanny packs made a huge wave in the fashion industry in the late ‘90s, but have since evolved in terms of durability, versatility, and usefulness. Now, you’ll not only see them being used as an addition to one’s fashion style, but they’re also commonly used for travelers and hikers.

This accessory is called by different names, like waist bags or hip packs. Whether you’re going for a quick day hike, or planning a long trip with your friends, using a fanny pack can ease your troubles in reaching for your backpack, and secure your valuable items.

Many hikers use fanny packs in their travels, which is why we created this article, in which we listed down the 16 best fanny packs for 2022. By endlessly trying out more than 30 waist bags, side-by-side, for many miles through different parks and mountain ranges, we were able to pick out the best fanny packs for men, women, and kids. We also listed down the best waterproof fanny packs, and the best ones with water bottle holders.

Let’s get started.

Best Overall Fanny Pack for Hiking

1. JanSport Fifth Avenue Fanny Pack

JanSport Fifth Avenue Fanny Pack

Capacity: 2.5L

Dimensions: 6” x 12.5” x 4”

Fabric: 600 Denier Polyester

Weight: 4oz

JanSport is one of the most reliable brands on the market when it comes to top-notch, reliable bags. If you’re looking for a fanny pack that can hold all your necessities, and can last almost a lifetime, then the JanSport Fifth Avenue Fanny Pack could just be the perfect product for you.

What we like about the Fifth Avenue is that it comes with different designs. Whether you’re a minimalist or a fan of colorful bags, they have covered almost all the patterns to fit anyone’s preference. Not only that, but it also has an adjustable strap, so you can easily sling it on your back, or wear it around your waist.

You’ll only find two zippered compartments in this fanny pack — one for the main compartment, and another one as a front pocket. Most of our hikers loved this pack because, even if it looks small, it can carry loads of items. With the 2.5L capacity, we were able to bring our phones, a power bank, a cord, a mini flashlight, a small wallet, snacks, and medicine.

We also like the fact that, even though there are only two compartments, the waist bag doesn’t feel overcrowded. Our campers also mentioned that they didn’t have to constantly rummage their pack just to get the items that they needed, which means it has the perfect space for you to see all your items with one look.

We honestly couldn’t find any downside to the JanSport Fifth Avenue Fanny Pack. With due diligence, we tried to look for any complaints on Amazon, and we were not surprised to see just a handful of complaints. These are mostly due to the design not matching the image that was shown, but you’ll see more reviews saying otherwise.

For hiking, it’s best to be prepared and pack everything you need. In the case of short hikes, you’ll be good with a fanny pack instead of a big backpack. To be able to use this kind of pack comfortably, you should know how to wear and tighten a fanny pack

Best Fanny Packs for Kids

2. Everest Signature Waist Pack – Junior

Everest Signature Waist Pack - Junior

Capacity: 0.8L

Dimensions: 8” x 3.5” x 2.5”

Fabric: 600 Denier Polyester

Weight: 4oz

Considered by many parents as one of the best fanny packs for kids, the Everest Signature Waist Pack – Junior has a durability, versatility, and design that are perfect for any kid who wants to have their own pack.

What we like about the Signature Junior is that you can adjust the waist strap from 14-60 inches, which will surely fit any kid, at any age. With this huge adjusting feature, your child can either wear their pack on their waist or across their chest. Also, we like the fact that it has an easy snap buckle to lock the waist strap, to ensure that your child will be able to use it themselves.

In addition, it comes in different colors and designs that will surely captivate any child’s eyes. It also has two zippered compartments — one in the front for smaller items, and one in the middle for larger materials. Our kid campers were very impressed with the large compartment’s size, as they were able to put their snacks, candy bars, and other items in it.

Not only that, but there were reviews online in which parents said they were so happy with the compartment’s size, as it could even fit a Samsung Galaxy S5 (no, we’re not advertising the phone). There were also reviews that said that children were able to put their 10oz water bottle in it.

We couldn’t find anything wrong with the Everest Signature Waist Pack – Junior. We went to look for complaints online, and we found some users complaining about the buckle getting broken after a couple of use, although we haven’t encountered this issue during our days of testing it.

3. Herschel Supply Co. Kid’s Twelve Hip Pack

Herschel Supply Co. Kid's Twelve Hip Pack

Capacity: 1L

Dimensions: 6.75” x 2.5” x 4”

Fabric: Heavyweight Cotton Canvas

Weight: 8oz

Herschel bags are well-known for their stylish designs and sturdiness, and the Herschel Supply Co. Kid’s Twelve Hip Pack is no exception. With its signature striped fiber liner, external woven name label, and fabric lining, you’ll be surprised by how comfortable this fanny pack is.

What we like about the Kid’s Twelve Hip Pack is that the entire built is simple enough that your kids can put it on themselves. It has a clip-fastened adjustable webbing strap that you can easily adjust to accommodate your child’s waistline.

Compared to the fanny packs that were reviewed above, this pack only has one exposed zipper with a Prusik cord zipper pull. And because it only has one compartment, you can put in bigger items, like a water bottle, a mobile phone, a portable charger, cords, and more.

What we didn’t like about the Herschel Supply Co. Kid’s Twelve Hip Pack, however, is that the placement of the zipper is somewhat awkward for most kids. When you open it, you have to extend the top cover to be able to see everything inside. If you prefer this kind of zippers, then this could be a great fanny pack for you and your kid.

4. Parkland Bobbi Hip Pack

Parkland Bobbi Hip Pack

Capacity: 1L

Dimensions: 5” x 7.5” x 2.5”

Fabric: 100% Recycled Polyester Exterior

Weight: 3.4oz

Parkland is only one of the few brands that create bags and hip packs from recycled materials, as it is the case for the Bobby Hip Pack. Made with 100% recycled polyester exterior and repurposes .5 plastic water bottles, you’ll not only have a bag that’s convenient to carry, but you will also help save the environment.

What we like about the Bobbi fanny pack is that it has an adjustable strap, so kids can freely wear it under their waist or across their body. Whichever position they pick, you’re sure that their valuables are safe, and within reach.

Additionally, our kid campers were happy to know that there are two compartments on this fanny pack. Indeed, there’s a front zip pocket, where the main compartment of the bag is. You can easily put a small water bottle, chargers, maps, snack bars, and more in it. The other pocket is located at the back. It’s a secured zip pocket where you can put the most valuable items, like a wallet, a mobile phone, keys, or credit cards.

There’s nothing that we didn’t like about the Parkland Bobbi Hip Pack because it’s comfortable to use and lightweight. It also has a great capacity limit, and a limited lifetime warranty.

5. Patagonia Ultralight Black Hole Mini 1L

Patagonia Ultralight Black Hole Mini 1L

Capacity: 1L

Dimensions: 4.75” x 8” x 2”

Fabric: 100% Recycled Nylon RipStop, Polyurethane, Silicone

Weight: 3.52oz

The Patagonia Ultralight Black Hole Mini Hip Pack is one of the most durable fanny packs we have ever tested. It’s comfortable to carry, made with durable materials, and big enough to hold almost all your essentials.

What we like about the Ultralight Black Hole Mini Hip Pack is that it’s compact and comfortable to use. Most of our campers mentioned that the fabric feels strong and lightweight, which is the perfect combination for anyone looking for a fanny pack. Also, we were happy to know that his pack is water-resistant, which is a big plus if you’re hiking and end up getting caught in an unexpected rainfall.

We also love the fact that you can stow it in a pocket inside the pack. You just have to open the small front zip pocket, pull out the zipper inside, and turn the pack inside out. Like the previous products, it has an adjustable strap, so you can either put it around your waist or across your body.

The only thing that we didn’t like about the Patagonia Ultralight Black Hole Mini Hip Pack is that it has small pocket openings, which means it’s harder to put and get out bigger items, especially if the bag is fully packed.

6. JanSport Oaktown Belt Bag

JanSport Oaktown Belt Bag

Capacity: 1.8L

Dimensions: 6” x 11.6” x 3.5”

Fabric: 600 Denier Polyester

Weight: 6oz

The JanSport Oaktown Belt Bag is considered by many as one of the best fanny packs for men on the market today, because of its superb durability, comfortable use, unique pocket positioning, and lifetime warranty.

What we like about the Oaktown is that it has a larger carrying capacity than the other products in this review. Moreover, unlike some other fanny packs, you’ll find a large zippered compartment in front of the bag, and another zippered compartment at the top of the pack.

Like its competition, this bag has an adjustable strap, so you can either wear it across your body or around your waist. Our campers were impressed when they tried to put a lot of items inside the bag. They were still comfortable using it, even if they put a mobile phone, a power bank, cords, a flashlight, a small medicine bag, cigarettes, candies, snack bars, and more inside of it.

We couldn’t find any downside to the JanSport Oaktown Belt Bag either, because it can accommodate everything you need to put in, and like any JanSport product, it comes with a lifetime warranty for any damages on the material or zippers.

7. The North Face Lumbar Belt Bag

The North Face Lumbar Belt Bag

Capacity: 4L

Dimensions: 14.56” x 2.75” x 5.9”

Fabric: 600 Denier 100% Recycled Polyester

Weight: 6.7oz

One of many fans’ favorites in our product testing is The North Face Lumbar Belt Bag. The classic TNF heritage woven label is a great addition to the minimalist design. Not only that, but it also has an invisible, secure-zip outer pocket where you can easily put your valuables for easy access.

What we like about The North Face’s Lumbar Pack is that it’s perfect if you’re a minimalist hiker. Indeed, not only does it have a simple design, but the pockets are also strategically placed, so you can easily access the content whenever you need to.

It’s also ahead of its competition with its 4-liter capacity, which is nearly three or four times more than the previously mentioned articles. However, it’s also available at a higher price, so you should weigh in if you’re willing to spend more for this fanny pack.

Overall, we give this fanny pack a high score with its durability and high capacity, but the only downside that we came across is that the straps can be annoying sometimes. Even though they’ve already adjusted them to fit their current size, they keep on getting loose, and you’ll need to readjust them.

Best Fanny Packs for Women

8. Herschel Seventeen Hip Pack

Herschel Seventeen Hip Pack

Capacity: 3.5L

Dimensions: 6.5” x 13” x 3.5”

Fabric: 100% Polyester

Weight: 8.8oz

The Herschel Seventeen Hip Pack is considered by many as one of the best fanny packs for women, because of its large capacity, simple design, and affordable price. If you’re looking for a stealth bag that can fit your camera, hiking essentials, or just your everyday items, this can be a great choice for you.

What we like about the Seventeen Hip Pack is that it’s specifically designed to accommodate a big item, or a lot of items in its main compartment. Our mother campers were happy to know that they were able to put a small bottle of milk (with water) inside, as well as a separate milk container, and a mobile phone. The front zippered pocket was also big enough to put in some candies, a small flashlight, and a snack bar.

If you don’t have any bottle to carry, you’ll be happy to know that this fanny pack can carry 18-55 camera lenses. Although, we don’t advise anyone to max it out, to ensure that you won’t get any problems when trying to get your things in and out of the bag.

What we didn’t like about the Herschel Seventeen Hip Pack, on the other hand, is that the zippers can be a bit too stiff on the first couple of uses. After a few more tests in our succeeding camping trips, the zipper started to get looser, and over time, it was finally loose enough for us to open and close it easily.

9. Travelon Anti-Theft Convertible Waist Pack

Travelon Anti-Theft Convertible Waist Pack

Capacity: N/A

Dimensions: 8” x 7” x 2”

Fabric: Polyester

Weight: 4oz

If you’re like some campers who are always looking at their surroundings for possible theft scenarios, then the Travelon Anti-Theft Convertible Waist Pack is perfect for you. Just like its name suggests, it’s a fanny pack specifically designed to protect your valuables from being stolen.

What we like about the Anti-Theft Convertible Waist Pack is that, just like a regular fanny pack, you have the choice to either wear it around your waist or across your body. In addition, these adjustable straps have reinforced steel cable hidden inside to prevent any thief from cutting the straps to steal the bag.

You’ll also be surprised to know that the polyester material that was used to make the body of this bag has Anti-Theft technology. We’ll break it down for you: blades won’t be able to slice your bag, the main compartments have redesigned locks, it has RFID blocking card slots to prevent any identity scanner thieves, and lock-down hardware for you to be able to lock your bag on a chair, or any stationary object, if you’re ever in public places.

While we were testing the Travelon Anti-Theft Convertible Waist Pack, we didn’t experience any issue, and didn’t find any downside to it. Although, we found some complaints online in which people mentioned receiving a defective product, and where the sewing was done on the other side. Most of the reviews, however, were positive, so just make sure that you check the product the day you receive it.

10. Rebecca Minkoff Nylon Belt Bag

Rebecca Minkoff Nylon Belt Bag

Capacity: 0.8L

Dimensions: 12” x 5.5” x 3.75”

Fabric: Nylon

Weight: 3.5oz

The last one on our list of the best fanny packs for women is the Rebecca Minkoff Belt Bag. If you’re looking for a more sophisticated fanny bag, but that can still hold your essential hiking items, then this bag is definitely for you.

What we like about the Minkoff Nylon Belt Bag is that, although it looks small, it’s actually big enough to put many things inside of it. We were surprised to see that we were able to fit almost all our valuables inside this bag.

We also had no issue at all with the zipper or adjustable strap, which were so easy to use. Additionally, the material feels soft on the skin, so you don’t have to worry about feeling hot when you’re hiking with it.

Just like the other bags, we don’t have any issue with the Rebecca Minkoff Belt Bag. We also didn’t find any issue nor complaint online, which is a big plus for us.

Best Waterproof Fanny Pack

11. Moment Fanny Pack – Camera Sling Bag

Moment Fanny Pack - Camera Sling Bag

Capacity: 3L

Dimensions: 8.5” x 5.5” x 3.5”

Fabric: Waterproof Recycled Kodra with a Double Layer Waterproof Coating

Weight: 10oz

The Moment Fanny Pack is one of the fans’ favorites when it comes to the best waterproof fanny packs, because of its minimalist design, double layer waterproof coating, seven different adjustable points in the strap, and reverse coil zippers.

What we like about the Moment Fanny Pack is that it has a versatile, adjustable strap that can accommodate tall and short people thanks to its seven different adjustable points. Plus, it can either be worn across the body or around the waist.

Furthermore, the recycled materials that were used for this pack include a double waterproof coating, and reverse coil zippers that protect your valuables from getting wet if you get surprised by the rain. This waist bag also has additional features, like a retractable camera lens wipe, soft inner linings, and an integrated clip for keys.

We didn’t encounter any problem with the Moment Fanny Pack while we were testing it on our week-long camp. But when we were searching online, we ran into some complaints about the strap getting loose easily.

12. SealLine Seal Pak Waterproof Hip Pack

SealLine Seal Pak Waterproof Hip Pack

Capacity: 4L

Dimensions: 9” x 5” x 7”

Fabric: 250D 6.7oz Polyurethane-Coated Polyester/Nylon Blend

Weight: 6.3oz

If you’re looking for additional protection against the rain, then the SealLine Seal Pak Waterproof Hip Pack could be the best choice for you. With its roll-top design and 100% waterproof materials, there’s no doubt that you’ll feel comfortable and secure with this waist bag.

What we like about the Seal Pak is that it has been upgraded from the previous version. With this new design, it has stay-put stability, and a removable waist belt that provides comfort, and makes it easy for you to remove it when needed.

Our campers were pleased with the bag, since it has a totally different design compared to the other products in this review. The roll-top design makes some of our campers feel safer regarding their valuables, especially during the rainy season, or when they were riding a boat. The external zip pocket can hold your less essential items, like candies, snack bars, or mini flashlights.

We didn’t find any downside to the performance of the SealLine Seal Pak Waterproof Hip Pack, except that some people may find the design a little awkward since it doesn’t have the typical zipper-lock.

13. Waterfly Slim Soft Polyester Water Resistant Waist Bag

Waterfly Slim Soft Polyester Water Resistant Waist Bag

Capacity: 2.2L

Dimensions: 9.4” x 4.3” x 2.1”

Fabric: Nylon and Polyester

Weight: 8.8oz

If you’re looking for a minimalist design for your fanny pack, we recommend that you check out the Waterfly Slim Soft Polyester Water Resistant Waist Bag. Even though it looks small, you can easily fit a smartphone with a 7.2” screen inside, plus all your daily essentials. Additionally, with its full waterproof material, you can surely enjoy any trip ahead of you.

What we like about the Waterfly Slim Soft is that it has multiple pockets. Unlike most of the products in this review that only have two pockets, this fanny pack has four, and a ring holder to secure all your essentials.

You can fit almost any smartphone with a screen up to 7.2 inches in the main compartment without making the bag look bulky. You can also put all your cards and your small wallet in the secure hidden pocket at the back of the bag, and your smaller items in the front pockets.

Also, compared to its competitors, you can wear this fanny pack in three different ways. Like your typical waist bag, you can put it around your waist and across your body, but you can also adjust the strap to wear it like a sling bag on your shoulder.

What we didn’t like about the Waterfly Slim Soft Polyester Water Resistant Waist Bag, on the other hand, is that the zipper can be a bit frustrating. On the first couple of tries, we noticed that the zipper on the main compartment can be hard to open and close. Although, we were able to loosen it with constant use. We found some complaints online, however, that stated that the zippers actually broke or wouldn’t budge.

Best Hiking Waist Bag with Water Bottle Holders

14. BP Vision Outdoor Fanny Pack

BP Vision Outdoor Fanny Pack

Capacity: 5L

Dimensions: 11” x 5” x 6”; 3” diameter for water bottle holder

Fabric: Nylon

Weight: 19.2oz

When it comes to choosing the best hiking fanny pack with a water bottle holder, it’s important to look for a product that can both carry your water bottles and essentials, and remain breathable and flexible enough for you to move around and hike. The BP Vision Outdoor Fanny Pack has owned our hearts in this category, as it can simply adjust to fit anyone who’s using it.

What we like about the BP Vision Outdoor is that it’s strong and reliable. It has dual water bottle holders on each side for you to be able to carry two full bottles at a time. You’ll also find three exterior front zipper pockets to put your phone, charger, mini flashlights, candies, and snack bars. Additionally, there are two exterior side pockets for you to better organize and separate your belongings.

To make you feel comfortable, the materials are equipped with high-quality, breathable, and durable mesh lumbar paddings. This is to ensure that if you max out a load of this fanny pack, you won’t feel any sweat on your waist or shoulders.

What we didn’t like about the BP Vision Outdoor Fanny Pack is that we are worried about the plastic clamp on the strap. Although it still felt strong during our week-long use, it doesn’t feel sturdy enough to last for years of hiking.

15. Osprey Tempest 6

Osprey Tempest 6

Capacity: 6L

Dimensions: 7.9” x 11.8” x 8.3”

Fabric: 70D x 100D Nylon Mini Shadow Brick and 420HD Nylon Packcloth

Weight: 11.6oz

If you’re worried about purchasing a fanny bag with a water bottle holder, but are not sure if your personal bottle can fit in it, then the Osprey Tempest 6 has got you covered. With its durable design, lightweight construction, and great pockets positioning, it comes along with two BPA-free PackBottles. With this bag, you’ll be able to reach your destination without being thirsty at all.

What we like about the Tempest 6 is that it’s a proven and tested fanny pack in the fields of mountaineering, biking, hiking, and running. Because the BioStretch hip belt hugs your waist without being too tight nor too loose, it helps you move easily, even if it’s at full capacity.

In addition, you’ll find dual-zippered access to the main compartment, equipped with a lumbar pack to ensure that you won’t feel sticky and wet while you’re moving. There’s also a front panel zippered slash pocket for you to put in your candies, snack bars, or small essential items.

Plus, it has horizontal StraightJacket compression straps, and bungee retention straps on the padded bottle sleeves. It’s also worth noting that there are two zippered hip belt pockets, where you can put other essentials that you would want to bring.

What we didn’t like about the Osprey Tempest 6, however, is that the hip belt straps can sometimes hurt. When we loaded this fanny pack with our essentials and fully filled water bottles, it caused some stress on the hip belt straps, which can be uncomfortable, especially if you have lower hip or back problems.

16. EGOGO Travel Sport Waist Pack

EGOGO Travel Sport Waist Pack

Capacity: 6L

Dimensions: 13” x 3.54” x 6.29”; 3.54” diameter for water bottle

Fabric: Water-resistant Nylon

Weight: 5.8oz

The last on our list of the best hiking waist bags with a water bottle holder is the EGOGO Travel Sport Waist Pack. Although it only has one water bottle holder, it comes with multiple zippered pockets, in which you can put all your essentials.

What we like about the EGOGO waist pack is that it has spacious compartments on all of its zippered pockets. The main compartment is big enough for you to carry your sunglasses, phones, power banks, cords, and snacks. There’s also a middle zippered compartment that you can use to carry other essential items.

Compared to the previous products in this review, the water bottle holder has a strap that you can effortlessly tighten to ensure that it won’t fall off, even if you bend forward. Additionally, you’ll find a small zippered pocket behind the bottle holder, where you can put smaller items.

We didn’t experience any issue with the EGOGO Travel Sport Waist Pack while we were camping out with our friends. Also, you’ll be happy to know that there are not many complaints online regarding this product, and that most of the reviews are positive feedbacks from the users.

Carrying a heavy and bulky pack on your back during a hike is inconvenient and exhausting, especially if you’re only going on a short trip. To remedy this problem, you can use a fanny pack instead. It’s small, but it can still carry your essentials. To help you maximize this small storage, read our article to know what you should keep in your fanny pack

Why are fanny packs good for hiking?

Hiking with fanny packs allows you to move better and navigate with your most essential items. In waist bags, you can carry your candies, snack bars, mobile phones, maps, sunglasses, and even water bottles without having to constantly reach in your backpack.

Whether you’re hiking your way to a new park, doing your daily jogging routine, going to a concert, watching a baseball game, or just going out with your friends, a fanny pack can provide you with security for your valuables, but can also make you feel comfortable and able to move around.

Where are you supposed to wear a fanny pack?

You can wear a fanny pack in three different ways — around your waist, across your body, or as a shoulder bag for a more fashionable look. Whichever way you choose to wear it, it still performs the same way, and protects and secures all of your belongings.

Around your waist

Put it just under your belly button, because this is where your torso is the smallest. A good reminder of where to put it is to place it where you wear your belt. You can either wear it slightly sideways, or at the center of your body.

Across your body

Some people are not comfortable if there are things under their waist, which is why they wear their fanny packs across their body, like a sling bag. This is a more secure approach since all of the pockets are right in front of you.

As a shoulder bag

For people who are more concerned about their fashion style, but still want to secure and bring all their essential items with them, you can wear a fanny pack like a shoulder bag, and just put it on one side of your body.

Conclusion

Although fanny packs have been in the fashion industry since the late ‘90s, more and more people today choose to use this type of bags because of their convenience and functionality. With a waist bag, you can bring all your important items, and go throughout your day.

Most hikers use a fanny pack because it allows them to put all their essential items just under their waist. Whether it’s a mobile phone, a map, a lighter, candies, snack bars, or even water bottles, choosing the right fanny pack can help you carry all of these easily.
